Overview

We have decided to place our self-hosted offering in maintenance mode and introduce a new single-tenant hosted offering that can expose our agentic capabilities.

History and Context

Two years ago, we released our first enterprise offering, a self-hosted deployment, even before launching a hosted cloud solution. Our background as a GPU infrastructure company allowed us to build such an offering, catering to large enterprises in regulated industries with security-related constraints. At that time, gaining traction with a hosted solution was challenging due to a lack of security certifications, making the self-hosted option a sensible choice.

Progress in the Generative AI Space

The advancements over the past two years, akin to two decades in traditional software development, led us to reassess our offerings:

  • We improved our offerings that sit between fully commercial-cloud hosted and fully self-hosted solutions, significantly enhancing our security posture and company stability.
  • We created a Hybrid deployment to address data concerns and became the first AI code assistance platform to achieve FedRAMP High authorization for highly regulated industries.
  • The technology expanded considerably; today’s frontier models outperform the largest foundation models from two years ago. Hosting our best Tab model now requires a rack of frontier GPUs, challenging its viability for most companies.
  • The capabilities gap between our self-hosted and hybrid/cloud solutions has grown, especially with the introduction of advanced features that can’t run entirely in a self-hosted environment.
  • Increased comfort with Cloud/Hybrid solutions offering zero-data retention guarantees has contributed to this decision.

The Decision

Faced with the inevitability that self-hosted solutions will not suit over 99% of developers, we needed to choose between:

(a) Continuing to invest in self-hosted deployment despite anticipating a decline in customers, (b) Focusing resources on delivering value to the majority of developers and customers.

We ultimately chose option (b), feeling it would serve our enterprise customers better. With our current certifications, security posture, go-to-market strategy, and product-level commitments (see Wave 8), we maintain a strong focus on the enterprise.

Future Directions

We are introducing a single-tenant hosted offering to provide additional security guarantees for our largest customers, which entails a minimum commitment due to hardware costs. We acknowledge that multitenancy concerns are a major objection to Cloud solutions.

In maintenance mode, we will support existing self-hosted customers until the end of their terms and provide incentives for transitioning to other deployment offerings, but we will halt feature development for new customers on the self-hosted platform.

We remain open to the future; should technology evolve to a point where self-hosting aligns more closely with hosted options, we would reassess that landscape. We are grateful for the success our self-hosted offering brought us, yet we are more excited about the future.
